Reputation management can take huge amounts of time as well as being costly. This is especially so if you have no clear objectives. There are some businesses that see online reputation management as keeping negative comments out of the top 20 listings on Google. Others may want to attempt to track every comment on the internet. Getting emotional about it can literally blow up in your face so now is the time to get smart and formulate a winning reputation management strategy.

You’ll find endless posts on the web about the best approach to internet reputation management; however, many don’t give a clear insight into what it actually involves. To give you a better idea of the process so you can decide whether reputation management is something for in-house or outsourced services here are some scenarios to consider.

Scenario 1 – bumping negative comments

If you are taking this route what keywords are you going to focus on? Take a couple of target keywords initially. Then look at the results within the first five pages of the results and assess those that are positive negative or plain neutral. List the top 10 neutral and positive results which you are happy to appear for the search term.

Next begin the process of linking to those sites or articles with the chosen keywords within the title or anchor text. Later on you can look at social media profiles but initially you’ll get quicker and better results using existing sites.

Now set up your profiles on the likes of Facebook, Squidoo, Blogger, Wordpress and Myspace. Bear in mind they won’t rank for your keywords quickly. Keep profiles unique and provide useful content. The aim is not to spam but add highly valuable content to raise your profile on the SERPs. You can also use social bookmarking sites.

Scenario 2 – Keeping track of all comments
Think about just how much tracking you would like to do. There are a wide range of article search sites available that can help you track your keywords such as Google Blog Search. You can subscribe to a feed on the relevant keywords to monitor conversations. You can also register a Google Alert under your company name and you’ll get results whenever your name comes up.


If you find good reviews and blogs leave them be except to perhaps thank the author for the positive comments. With negative posts and reviews be objective. Now is not the time to get angry or emotional. You need to be smart and focused. It’s not always the case that these types of comment are seen at the top of the search results so you may not need to bump them. The overall strategy should be to create a general positive or as a minimum a neutral reputation online. If you are reacting to negative comments this will be impossible. Focus on positive interaction and you won’t go wrong.
