The pace of technological change has never been greater and it shows no sign of slowing down. In industry and manufacturing, in science and in our everyday lives, technology is far more pervasive than it ever has been before. It’s also more accessible. Small businesses and even private individuals now have capabilities that were the exclusive domain of large corporations not so long ago.

Take brochure printing for example. It’s now possible for anyone with a high-quality home printer to make nice looking glossy leaflets at their own desk in their own living room (although with the price of ink cartridges it would be extremely expensive for them to do so in any significant quantity).

Small commercial printing companies can now produce sharp graphics with a limited amount of cutting edge equipment. The latest colour printers are fast, efficient, and produce results that would have astounded the printers working just 20 or 30 years ago. Delivery of proofs and design drafts by email or FTP is now standard throughout the industry and the quality of the results is far, far greater than ever before.

The new technology is great for competition and great for new businesses. Where once only large, decades-established print houses were capable of delivering high volume colour brochure printing (for example), that same level of service can now be delivered by newer, smaller businesses with up to date printers.

The changes in printing technology have brought the highest quality services into the price range of far more clients. Efficiency gains have helped bring prices down and greater competition means lower prices in any manufacturing sector. Any small to medium sized business can now get the same quality printed matter as a multinational company. It’s not just direct improvements in printing technology that have made this possible, but also the broader and more diverse printing industry that these advancements have brought.
